Tips for Traveling with Kids

Are you ready to jet-set with your kids? The adventures don’t have to stop just because you added to your family, but it does make your vacations a bit more complicated. Fortunately, with a few of our travel tips, you can be prepared for whatever comes your way.

Budget more time than you think you need

Before kids, you could roll up the airport an hour before takeoff, breeze through security, and walk onto the plane while looking at your phone the entire time. You won’t do any of these things when traveling with kids.

Repeat: You won’t do any of these things it kids in tow.

We hate to break it to you, but parking the car, checking in, going through security, buying snacks/drinks, going to the bathroom, and boarding the plane will take 2-3 times as long as you expected because you now have 2-3 times the people. You may have hated waiting in the airport before, but it’s unlikely you have any time to wait at the gate. Give yourself more time than you think you’ll need, so you won’t stress about missing your flight when the unexpected happens.

Buy or rent items at the destination

Are you an over-packer or an under-packer? Most people tend to overpack, and parents often fall into that category. What happens if your baby needs x, y, or z? Will your toddler throw a fit if they don’t have all their favorite toys? Why choose between outfits when you can bring all of them?

Parents often equate baby and children’s items with comfort. What happens when you don’t have the one item that your child loves? Will they be able to sleep? Will they interrupt your entire trip?

By all means, pack the familiar items and comfort toys that you know will keep your routines consistent. However, don’t feel obligated to pack the entire house. Items like diapers, wipes, and favorite foods/snacks can almost always be purchased at your destination. These can save you a lot of room and hassle trying to transport them to your destination. Additionally, many accommodations rent cribs, car seats, highchairs, or other must-have baby items, which can also help prevent you from overpacking.

Prep your kids ahead of time

Kids are human beings, and like most people, they get uncomfortable when they don’t understand what’s going in. One of the best ways you can alleviate this discomfort as a parent is by taking the time to explain and introduce the trip to your kid(s) in advance.

Go over an outline of the trip before heading out
What will happen at each point in the trip?
What do you want your kids to be prepared for?
Is there anything that will be new to them?
Is there anything they’ve already done and can get excited for?
Explain to them how you will arrive at your destination
Will you arrive by plane, car, train, bus, etc.
Explain your expectations for behavior during travel and at the destination
Tell them what they should look forward to and help them get excited
Will they see someone they haven’t see in a long time?
Will there be new animals?
Will they be able to eat snacks that they like?

Final Thoughts

During this time, think through your child’s eyes. Traveling is exciting, but it can also be an uncomfortable experience because of the unknown. As you begin this journey together, plan to go slow, bring what you need (but not more than that), and explain your trip ahead of time. You’ve got this!

Getting Around Cabo

Cabo is a place that can easily be toured on foot. Many things to do in Cabo San Lucas are in the downtown Cabo San Lucas area, so if your accommodations are here, you'll have no problem exploring the varying sites. Of course, you'll need a ride from the airport to your hotel or resort. There are many taxis around that can be reserved to get you to your accommodations, though they can be pricey unless arranged ahead of time.

Those who are budget-conscious should check ahead with their hotels and resorts concerning shuttle availability. Many locations offer free or low-cost shuttles to get you to nearby attractions. Alternatively, you can rent a car for more freedom. Be cautious driving at night as some areas can be unsafe.

If you decide to rent a car, keep in mind – gas stations are not self-serve here. Employees will come out to pump your gas for you. It’s customary to tip gas station employees and shuttle drivers.

Paddle By The Arch

The Arch, also known as El Arco, is a well-known monument that is a must-see while visiting. It is a large rock formation that forms an arch in the water. It sits in the water where the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet. You can easily reach this spot by renting a stand-up paddleboard. It is one of the best locations for spotting sea lions as they like to hang out in this area. Make sure to include it in your Cabo adventures.

Go Out Dancing

Cabo San Lucas is known for its active nightlife. Here, you can find an endless number of bars, clubs, and live entertainment that will keep you enjoying yourself all night. There is also a brewery if you’re interested in a more relaxed vibe. A few popular locations to stop by include Tanga Tanga, Jungle Bar, and Baja Brewing Company.

Catch A Glimpse Of Celebrities

Cabo San Lucas is a favorite vacation spot for many celebrities. If you’re enjoying the nightlife here, you’re likely to meet someone famous while dancing. While not guaranteed, it’s an exciting event when it happens.

Observe The Whales

Whale watching is a highly loved activity in Cabo. Your best bet is to head out on a boat tour to catch sight of these majestic water animals. Humpback whales are mainly visible in the winter – between December and April as they migrate during mating season. Viewing the whales by boat allows you to get up close and personal with them.

If, by chance, you don't see any whales on your tour, you'll likely receive another tour for free, as these tours want each visitor to leave happy. There are smaller tours, larger tours, and tours available that include brunch/lunch.

Converse With Locals

If you're concerned about not being able to communicate with locals due to a language barrier – don't be! Many people in Cabo – locals and visitors alike – speak English. If you speak Spanish, you'll also fit in well here.

Spend The Day At Medano Beach

When visiting any location in Mexico near the coast, it's required to see the available beaches at least once during your trip. Medano Beach is an excellent choice as it offers both party vibes and serenity, depending on which section of the beach you visit. Closer to town, you’ll find bars and restaurants right on the beach. Further from town, you’ll find a relaxing spot calling your name.

This beach allows swimming and watersports like parasailing.

A few other beaches of note include Lover's Beach (also known as Playa del Amor), Divorce Beach, and Santa Maria beach.

Try The Cabo San Lucas Food

If you've ever visited Mexico before, you'll know the cuisine is a big reason people love to travel here. As mentioned above, Cabo is a great spot for fresh seafood since it is located right near the water. In specific, you'll want to try the fish tacos.

If seafood is not of interest to you, plenty of restaurants ranging from casual to fine dining can be found along the Tourist Corridor and at the Cabo San Lucas Marina. Expect to encounter food that has influences from China, the Middle East, and Germany as well. Many immigrants have traveled from these locations and settled in the area providing a delicious mix of available food.

Safety Precautions

While Cabo is generally a safe place to visit, there are a few notes to keep in mind while visiting. Do your best to stay in tourist areas as the crime rate is generally lower in these spots. Also, ensure you keep your belongings close and avoid wearing flashy jewelry during your Cabo weekend trip. Note the signs/flag colors that are posted on the beaches as the water can be rough and should be avoided during certain times of the year. If a red/black flag is posted, stay on the sand instead.

Travel Requirements

A valid passport is necessary to enter Mexico. This means that your passport can not expire within six months of your trip. Upon arrival, you'll receive a Tourist Permit. This is needed to exit the country at the end of the trip, so you'll want to ensure it is not lost.

Warm Weather Year-Round

For those looking to escape chilly winters, Cabo is an excellent vacation spot. Expect temperatures to stay in the 60s to 90s (Fahrenheit) throughout the year. With plenty of outdoor activities available and beautiful weather in Cabo, you won’t want to stay inside much when visiting. For hotter days – opt for water-based activities. Or, start your activities earlier in the day. Either way, make sure you bring plenty of water to drink during the day. Visit between May and June for excellent accommodation rates and avoidance of tropical summer storms.
